FAQ
Is FUZ a household products company or an accessories company?
FUZ is a design company that is not limited to one market – instead it focuses on a way of thinking about products and a method of production. Whether it’s a handbag, placemat, or lamp, if an idea fits how we do things we will produce it, regardless of what market it might be sold in.
Who designs your products?
Our design team is lead by
Josh Jakus and consists of an informal group of FUZ employees, colleagues, and friends.
Are your products hand-crafted?
As the first step in our production process, all of our materials are machine cut for accuracy and efficiency. All soft goods are then sewn by a real person using a sewing machine. All hard goods are end-finished and labeled by hand.
Where are your products made?
California. We cut in Hayward and Pleasanton, sew in Oakland, and assemble and inspect in our warehouse in Berkeley.
Why don’t you move your manufacturing to Asia?
Producers in Asia demand very large orders and have very long lead times. This would eliminate our ability to experiment with unusual products and introduce new products quickly. In addition, quality control is a huge issue with overseas manufacturing -- we would have to order 120% of what we need to account for all the defects. We’d rather do things differently so that we can enjoy the process!
Why is industrial felt grey?
Industrial felt is made from excess fiber from wool fabric production. That usually means men’s suits. So if you look at our felt up close, you can see all the usual suit colors mixed together. Because different seasons call for different colors, the felt will vary in shade from batch to batch.
Where does your cork come from?
We use compressed granulated cork, similar to what you see in most bulletin boards or duck decoys. This type of cork is excess material from wine cork production. Sections of raw bark from cork trees in Portugal are cut into wine corks, and the leftover is ground up, compressed, and glued into the sheets and blocks that we use.
Can I see your products in person?
We sell our products in a growing list of retail stores around the world. Check our
store locator, but please call your nearest store first to make sure they have stock.
Can I see your products at a trade show?
We don't exhibit at trade shows. Instead, we concentrate on making our website experience as rich as possible, including product demonstrations through animations and sounds.
Can I visit your warehouse?
Our studio/warehouse is not currently set up to entertain customers. However there are plans in the works to open a storefront in the SF bay area so we can show off new products, host events, and simply let people on the street find us more easily.
Are you going to produce a laptop bag?
We are currently working on a laptop bag, something a little different from most of the messenger bag clones already out there.
Can you design a custom item for me?
Our production chain is nimble, but not quite nimble enough to create one-off custom items. However if you represent a company or institution or are hosting a large event we would be happy to talk about bulk custom orders.
